Science Birthday Party Ideas

Science birthday parties are fun for adults and kids alike. Plus, they are gender neutral and are loved by both girls and boys. We’re trying to take our birthday invitations to the next level and are always experimenting with different ways to get our guests excited about our upcoming parties. This party was no exception. We are obsessed with boxed invitations. There is something really fun about boxed invitations.

We wrapped our invites up like a perfect little gift and presented them to all of our guests. For these invitations, we took black boxes and filled them with colorful shred. Next, we placed our fun Science Birthday Invitations  down and added our Science Laboratory Toxic Tags onto a mini test tube. We secured the test tubes in place with a Glue Dot. Lastly, we placed the clear slider on top to close the box. We then wrapped them with white wrapping paper and added a Science Address Wrap to the outside of the package.

Inside our mini test tubes, we added in White Sixlets Candies added our Science Laboratory Toxic Tag and wrapped Washi Tape around the cork. The test tubes we used were 4″ in length and .67″ diameter (17mm). Approximately 1/2 ounce capacity. They fit perfectly on our Science Birthday Invitations. We are loving how many layers and textures we used. If you got an invitation like this in the mail, would you feel more compelled to attend the party? Would this stand out from the crowd?

Our color palette for this party was black, white, teal, and several shades of green. We also used hexagon shapes and flask and beaker graphics throughout. For this party, we used a vintage hanging chalk board and my bestie (and photog extraordinaire) Courtney Jade, of Love Courtney, assisted in the chalk art work. That’s what besties are for, right? In a pinch, they hand chalk your back drop. She is the best!

Next I took these round things I picked up from the craft store, years ago. I don’t even know what these are used for, so if someone knows, let me know. I spray painted them black and used fishing line to hang Plastic Light Bulbs filled with colorful paper shred from them. We try to add fun height and dimension to all of our parties.

For other party decor, I repurposed my Grandma’s globe. With just a few simple coats of chalk board spray paint, I had this fun globe that was waiting to be written on. Thankfully, my mother-in-law has awesome handwriting and she penned this little message onto the globe. This also stayed consistent with out “Science/School/Chalk” feel.

We also added beakers, flasks, and other traditional science paraphernalia. We took a trip down to Nurnberg Scientific in downtown Portland and picked out a bunch of glassware. They had everything from test tubes to beakers and lab coats, and everything in between. They were super helpful too. We simply filled these with gumballs and sixlets and added a few of our printables to dress them up.

We are totally obsessed with anything Heidi Swapp. I always try and find a few pieces that I can use throughout the party. Her Marquee Love Letters were the perfect fit. They come in every letter A-Z and special characters too. Plus, you can customize them with the template that is included or I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out a custom insert in my party colors!

You can also spread your party over several areas of your house or venue. We took a vintage cart and created another dessert area. We hung these numbered balloons from Fancy That to represent each of the boys’ ages. We then used our Science Laboratory Poster (this is also the print on the back of our invitation) as a backdrop. It’s fun to create several different party areas throughout. This will give your guests several areas to enjoy.

When it comes to science related food, you don’t have to be super literal as long as your food is consistent with your theme. I usually try and select sweet items that are either in the color palette or have party related decor on them. You food can be simple or elaborate, just keep it consistent with your theme.

Check out our cake, for example. We bought a simple white cake and added some festive candles and some science cutouts. Though this cake isn’t covered in elaborate fondant decorations, it still looks clean and decorative.

I am loving the caramel apples by Roni’s Sugar Creations. Roni is incredibly talented. These apples were delicious and amazing!  She also made the spectacular chocolate covered oreos.

Cupcakes are another party favorite. They are easy to make or buy. Personally, I think they are easier than cake. You don’t have to deal with cutting them, etc. For this party, I had the talented Brittany, of Edible Details, craft up some fondant toppers. She always does a wonderful job!  We also took half the batch of cupcakes and added green slime to them. This was the easiest cupcake topper ever. Plus, ooey gooey and slimy totally fits our science theme.

We also made mini cupcakes. Mini cupcakes are also great for kids parties. I swear kids never eat a full cupcake. Mini cupcakes are perfect when you are serving a bunch of other sweets too. For our mini cupcakes, we placed a gummy frog candy on top.  Aren’t these cute? You know me, I am a sucker for anything mini. Plus, if you put candy on top, it’s that much better.

We made radioactive worms jello. It was just green apple jello with a gummy worm in a petrie dish. I think I placed the worms in when the jello was too hot. It made the worms disintegrate a bit. It was still a fun treat.

We also added some color appropriate donuts. I am a total donut addict. They are another easy store bought treat. Don’t think all of your desserts have to come from a bakery or that you have to slave away in the kitchen. Sometime you just need to think about what’s available at the grocery store and how your favorite treats can work with your party.

Your beverages can include simple drinks like juice or water. You can also create punch to match your party color. I like to have a variety of beverages for my guests to choose from.

For party favors, we always give the kids an opportunity to fill up a to-go bag. Then if they haven’t eaten something that they wanted to, they can take it home and enjoy it later. Plus, I don’t want to get stuck with all those leftovers. We also made them homemade slime. This is a fun science related paper favor that was easy to make and inexpensive.
