Welcome to part 1 of a 2 part party post. This post will focus on setting the tone of your Unicorn party from your invitations down to your menu selection. We will also discuss how to add in food that is not only theme appropriate, but decorative too. The second post will cover décor + party favors.

Unicorn birthday parties are all the rage right now. My daughter, Kennedy is obsessed with My Little Ponies, but we decided to do a non-commercial party.  We took all of the aspects that we loved from the traditional My Little Ponies such as bright rainbow colors, unicorns, and other magical elements and created our own unique unicorn party.  This theme is super fun and lends itself to many creative elements. Check out all the fun things we created . . .

The invitation is the most important part of any party. It’s always where I start my design process and the first thing my guests see. It literally sets the tone of the party. Lately, I’ve been trying something a little different. I’ve been creating “boxed” invitations that are a hybrid between your standard invitation + a party favor. They have been super fun! These return address wraps also look great on any unicorn invitation.

I created a fun little .gif so you get the concept of these little invites. I started with a little white box, added a motivational label on top, applied a rainbow pattern to the sides of the boxes, created a soft bed of hand punched felt confetti, inserted a glittery gold unicorn, added an adorable invitation, and tied it all up to create a pretty little package.

Once you select your invite, move onto your menu, party décor, and party favors. Usually I figure out my menu and what items I can make just a little prettier! For this party, I went with a pretty simple menu. You can choose between cake or cupcakes. You know me, I picked both!

Unicorn Birthday Party Ideas | by Jessica Wilcox of Modern Moments Designs | www.modernmomentsdesigns.com These adorable little toppers were made just for me by Edible Details. Brittany always does the best job! Cupcake toppers are darling and edible too.  Add cute cupcake wraps for even more personalization. The yummy cupcakes were baked by Kyra’s Bake Shop, which is an all Gluten Free Bakery. Her cupcakes are award winning. If you don’t have a best friend like Kyra who always helps me out, you can always bake your own cupcakes or even pickup store bought ones.

If you want to serve cake too, you don’t always have to choose something elaborate. Sometimes a simple cake is just what you need. I just went to my local grocery store. They have a “from scratch” bakery and I asked them to create a rainbow cake with a simple white ruffle design.  I added a No. 3 acrylic gold glitter topper that I purchased from The Tomkat Studio.  This cake is simple and perfect. Plus, I wanted my backdrop to be the star of this show!

I pretty much only serve SUGAR at my parties. I love the idea of savory foods, but it just adds a whole other element that I typically don’t want to take on. If you plan your parties after meal times, ideally your guests will have already eaten and won’t mind a sweet treat for dessert.

After cake + cupcakes, I usually move onto cookies and candy. You can order custom cookies or you can just purchase store bought ones. Your guests won’t care either way!

Unicorn Birthday Party Ideas | by Jessica Wilcox of Modern Moments Designs | www.modernmomentsdesigns.comThese darling cookies were made by one of my favorite ladies. She’s sweet and is extremely talented.  Check out her work at Auntie Bea’s Bakery. If you don’t want to splurge on custom cookies, then go the grocery store route. You can add a few touches to take store bought cookies from ordinary to extraordinary! Here we took Trader Joe’s Jo-Jo cookies, which are much like Oreos and we dipped them in colored chocolate melts and added sprinkles. Another fun idea is to serve popcorn in individual boxes. These boxes come in a ton of colors! You can find them at many retailers from craft stores to specialty online retailers, like Shop Sweet Lulu.  Individual portion popcorn boxes are functional and give you another way to add decorative elements. I purchased these bright pink boxes from Oriental Trading Company and they had been sitting in my supply bucket. This was the perfect excuse to use these darling little boxes.

Popcorn is fun because there are endless recipes you can make. Make something that coordinates with your party theme. I selected Sweet & Salty Cake Batter Popcorn with Rainbow Sprinkles. This was delicious and the rainbow sprinkles complimented our theme perfectly!

Add in some candy that matches your color palette. These fun little Sixlets come in a bunch of colors and everyone loves them. You can even make your own mix to match your party colors.

I always do water bottles or mini water bottles. It’s nice to be able to grab a bottle and not have to deal with pouring punch that will inevitably end up on your floor. If you do want to serve juice or something sweet, I always reach for juice boxes. They are a bit more kid friendly and are just as easy as water bottles.
