Out of this World Star Wars Birthday Party

**AS SEEN ON HOSTESS BLOG** I’m super excited to share this amazing Out of This World Star Wars Birthday Party put on by Julie of Totes in Tow who happens to be one of my dear friends. Julie’s son Mason was turning 6 and loves Star Wars. After doing some research and checking my favorite place, Pinterest, we realized there really are not very many well done Star Wars Parties out there. I’ve had a Star Wars collection in my shop for a few years now. We just altered some of the designs to fit Julie’s party needs.

The party was super fun, colorful, and the kids enjoyed every minute of it! We opted out of doing any sort of light sabers thinking that might not be such a good thing for 5-7 year old boys. Well, we were wrong. Who knew that boys could take the masks that were at their place setting and have a “sword” fight with those. Leave it up to boys to find new and creative assalt weapons! Hahaha!

Julie did a ton of DIY items including the fondant Galactic Cupcake Toppers and the Yoda sandwich cookies, which were made from the Star Wars Heroes & Villains Cookie Cutters purchased at Williams-Sonoma. They had to be one of my favorite details at the party.They were almost too cute to eat! She also created the shimmery star backdrop which gave the perfect “space” effect without being over the top. I’m also totally loving all the bright pops of color used here – from the Spacey Shark Cups and Ewok Snacks to the lime green Yoda Soda and marshmallow Yoda and Stormtrooper Imperial Pops.

We used some of my all time favorite vendors inlcuding Blume Box (who is a local Portland company that I just discovered a month or so ago and I am totally in LOVE with), Jade Teahouse (who makes the best macarons around), and of course, Shop Sweet Lulu (none of my parties are complete without Jesse’s amazing party accessories), just to name a few!

I was lucky enough to help style the party after Julie did all the hard leg work of coming up with the overall concept, baking, and tracking down all the Star Wars party swag! Awesome job Julie! Can’t wait to see what you come up with for your next big event!

PARTY DETAILS, as told by Julie…

My son recently turned 6 years old and he told me months ago he wanted a Star Wars themed party. This was nice for me because it gave me a long time to gather ideas, products, and do my favorite thing….CREATE!

My first idea came when we attended a Star Wars event at our local Pottery Barn Kids. At the event, the kids were given these cool paper masks featuring different Star Wars characters. I inquired with the manager what would happen to the extra masks after the event, and they graciously donated them to me the next day. Thank you Pottery Barn Kids! The masks become the template for my son’s party invitations and were also used as a nice table accents at the party itself.

My next big find came from Walmart. They had Star Wars Marshmallow Pops (on clearance at that)! Don’t panic, I checked the expiration dates to make sure they would be safe for the kids to eat months later at the party. Those marshmallow pops helped me choose my color pallet of lime green, teal blue, grey, black, and white. I also bought the classic Star Wars party plates and napkins from Walmart, featuring all the characters the kids loved.

It all started coming together one day while I was browsing through Williams-Sonoma. I found my favorite inspiration for the party, Star Wars Heroes & Villains Cookie Cutters. They cut the cookies and press an image into the top of your dough in 2 easy steps. I used the cookie cutters to create 3 different fondant cupcake toppers and green Yoda cookies, sandwiched with frosting. They turned out amazing!

From there I picked up color coordinating striped favor bags, candy cups, stripey straws, candles, baking cups, and washi tape all from Shop Sweet Lulu. I also shopped locally at Fancy That, to pick up some more candy cups. Another great local company I used was Blume Box. I used the pieces from Blume Box to hold the marshmallow pops, masks, a party sign, and balloons. They are so diverse! For the background, I attached an entire roll of sliver glitter wrapping paper, from Paper Source, to a large piece of white foam core board.

The last component of my table was the serving pieces that would display our food. I wanted something that would not break easily when transported and give height to my table. I chose to create some custom cake stands from unfinished wood. I purchased unfinished wood plaques and unfinished decorative candle sticks in various sizes. After using wood glue to secure the pieces, I spray painted them in a high gloss dark grey. I really like how they turned out.

I had fun naming all the foods that would be served during the party . The list and ingredients are as follows, in case you want to try any yourself!

– Yoda Soda: equal parts of 7Up and Hawaiian Punch Lemon Lime Flavor
– Imperial Pops: Marshmallow Pops
– Ewok Snacks: Goldfish and pretzel sticks
– Yoda Cookies: Tinted sugar cookie dough green and sandwiched frosting between two Yoda cookies
– Spacey Sharks: Teal blue gummy sharks (we chose these based on color more then theme)
– Slurp Sabers: Star Wars edition yogurt tubes by Go-Gurt
– Galactic Cupcakes: Cupcakes with Star Wars fondant toppers
– Macarons: Pistachio and Coconut flavors (mainly for adults)

Finally, the big day came and I was ready to see my son’s reaction when he saw the party room! We hosted my son’s party at our local Athletic Club. The kids played sports in the gym prior to making their way to the party room. When they made it down the hall, a large poster of my son dressed as Darth Vader welcomed them to the party. From there, it was all fun times and a lot of happy kids!
