We are loving the Mermaid Birthday Party trend. What’s not to love about all the pretty pastel colors,  glittery textures, and stunning mermaids!? Our inspiration came from the amazing ombré blue glitter backdrop that was hanging in the Papyrus window display. Pair that with some hanging sea creatures, an incredible two-tier mermaid cake, and a treasure trove of sparkling party favors and your party is sure to make a splash. Check out all of our Mermaid Birthday Party Ideas below.

Start your party off right with our Mermaid Birthday Invitations. These invitations feature an ombré  watercolor ocean backdrop with a stunning mermaid, sea creatures, and coral accents. To make our mermaid extra special, we added a glitter overlay on her tail with our Silhouette Cameo and Silhouette Double-Sided Adhesive Sheets. Simply add glitter after you’ve secured your Silhouette Double-Sided Adhesive. All of our invitations are double-sided and are professionally printed. They are perfect for your next mermaid party.

Mermaid Kisses and Starfish Birthday Wishes is the sweet saying we choose for the back of our Mermaid Birthday Invitations. It also is the perfect mini sign to display at your Mermaid Birthday Party. We try to create invitations that can be used long after the party is over by including special quotes or sayings that represent our party theme. These can be placed in a frame, on an inspiration board, or as decor in the child’s bedroom.

This might be one of my favorite cakes of all times. Our mermaid cake combines elegant waves with shimmery pearl candy accents along with a delicate display of colorful mermaid scales. We added in some brown sugar to give it a bit more texture and sprinkled mini purple starfish on top. We topped this stunning cake with the same mermaid that we used on our invitations. This cake is simply amazing.

How many treasures can one cavern hold? We created a small treasure trove of shinny and colorful party favors for our guests to choose from. These fun and sparkly nail files were beautiful along with our pastel bracelets. We also made matching gumball necklaces for our guests to wear or take home with them.

Our Mermaid Gumball Necklaces were super easy to make. There are a million tutorials on Pinterest, but I will give you the Reader’s Digest version. Pick out your favorite gumballs. We used shimmery pearlescent powder blue, shimmery pearlescent pink, shimmery pearlescent lavender, and shimmery pearlescent teal green.  We used 4 colors in all, but you can select as many colors as you’d like as long as they fit within your color palette. Pick up some purple organza ribbon online or from the craft store. Use a large needle or cordless drill. We tried it both ways and the drill was a lot easier and way faster. Use a large needle to thread the gum balls onto your ribbon. Tie a small knot in between each gumball to secure in place. That’s pretty much it.

We used our jewelry holder to hang these necklaces from. Topped it with a simple tiara and check out the fun look we created. Plus, your guest will have a colorful take home necklace. This could also double as a DIY craft project at the party, if you are looking for an activity to include.

One of my favorite things to include in my dessert buffets are party favor gifts. When you select gifts that match your birthday party theme, they double as decorations too. These are just too pretty to be shoved into party favor bags. Use them throughout your dessert buffets to add visual interest. We also allow our guests to pick which favors they’d like to take home with them. Then everyone gets just what they want and there are no tears.

Using appropriately colored candies is a great way to add color to your dessert table. Plus, it’s relatively cost effective. Here we used shimmery pearlescent gumballs, light purple shimmer sixlets, and blue shimmer sixlets. Just add these colorful candies to clear apothecary jars or other small candy jars. We also added Jelly Belly Shimmer Pearlescent Jewel Candies to create an under the sea scape. Add in some fondant starfish and a few paper coral reefs and you have a beautiful underwater edible scene.

Also, have some fun with your candy. Since this is a Mermaid themed birthday party, adding in the “Ah, Sharks” place card along with our gummy shark candy was a fun addition. Since the gummy sharks matched our color palette and our theme, they worked perfectly in our dessert table.

We’ve talked about adding in candy and colorful party favors to make your party a success and visually appealing too. Another great tip is to add in theme appropriate desserts. For this party, we added in the stunning mermaid cake, along with other fun mermaid desserts.

Your desserts can be simple or elaborate. Just make sure they match your theme and color palette. We made our own fondant topped sugar cookies. Pick up some pre-made white fondant and this sea life fondant and gum paste mold. We used this amazing tutorial by Semi Sweet to create our cookies with a few modifications. Instead of fronting them with royal icing, I used a white buttercream frosting and created round fondant disks as a base to secure my sea life fondant creations to. So, you can follow the tutorial or go rogue like I did.

For the cupcakes, we took a more simple approach and bought purple ombre baking cups and teal ombre baking cups and made homemade cupcakes. Make your favorite buttercream frosting recipe or purchase store bought frosting. For a little garnish, top with a few pink pearlescent sixlets. Even those we didn’t make elaborate toppers, these still matched our party and stayed consistent with our theme.

For a more elaborate look, we had Mermaid Tail Cupcake Toppers make by Edible Details. Brittany always does such an amazing job! These fun glitter tails were a cute addition to our homemade cupcakes. We also designed cupcake toppers or party circles that you can use throughout your birthday table scape. Add an edible bed of brown sugar to create a sand effect without the having to eat sand. Yuck! Using brown sugar throughout the party added a fun texture and was edible too.

Another fun dessert for any Mermaid themed Birthday Party are clam cookies. These fun Clam Cookies are darling and they taste great too. Pickup some store bought cookies, add some coral colored butter cream frosting, and a shimmery white sixlets pearl and you are all set.

You know any excuse I have to include donuts in my parties, I jump at the opportunity. By simply adding shimmery purple and pink jimmies to these donuts they fit our Mermaid Birthday theme perfectly. Contact your local donut shop and ask if they can accommodate your special request. Donuts are another inexpensive dessert.

Wash down all of these sugar sweets with some Blue Lagoon Punch. We whipped up this blue punch by combining Blue Hawaiian Polar Blast Punch + Sprite. You can also add in some Pineapple juice too.  This festive drink is delicious and colorful too. We placed pink stripy straws and attached a starfish cutout to complete the look.

Mini waters are always a hit at our parties. These are Trader Joe’s Mini Waters. They are just the perfect size for kids. Get our Mermaid Mini Water Bottle Wraps and these Mini Water Bottles to create this cute combination. Every Mermaid Birthday Party should include Sea Water.

Adding in creative and decorative printables throughout your party is a must. Make sure you are adding in decorative paper elements in an organic way. Each of these additions really makes your party stand out. Plus, adding in stylish paper products are simple and inexpensive. Here is our little Mermaid. We even dressed her to match her birthday. I created this simple Sea Shell shirt the morning of the party. It was that easy. You will only need a few supplies. Pick up your favorite t-shirt of long sleeve shirt. We purchased ours at Target. Buy some Gold Glitter Iron On T-shirt Vinyl online or from your local craft store. Simply use your Silhouette Cameo to cut our sea shells and iron them on. We paired this shirt with a teal pettiskirt and gold glitter shoes.
